Friends Of Lincoln Castle

Archers have been part of the Castle life since Norman times.  The modern group, founded in 2000, exists to promote traditional Longbow archery, bring life to the Castle grounds and promote the Friends of Lincoln Castle.

For shooting dates see the Events section.

We are the FOLC Archery Group displaying target archery inside the Castle.

Membership is open to all members of the FOLC over the age of 8 years, however 8 - 16 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, proof will be required, at all times when on the archery range.

The group only use longbows.  Equipment for trainees will be provided.  All archers must undertake a Safety Test, which will take place once they are judged to be competent.  The emphasis is on safety whilst enjoying the sport.

Each year in September the group organises and hosts an annual longbow tournament held in the Castle with longbow archers from all over the UK attending.  The tournament originally began in 1979 under the guidance of the late Jack Whitehouse, who originated longbow archery in the Castle as a hobby and entertainment for all.  Jack would be very proud to know that his tradition still draws a large gathering each year.  This is the only time archers can wear medieval costumes, for all other days group sweatshirts can be purchased although they are not compulsory.

FOLC archery group members qualify to take part in this event once they have passed their safety test.  For those members yet to achieve that standard there is plenty of assistance needed in preparing the tournament.

So if you would like to try out longbow archery and become a member of our group check out the events dates and bring your FOLC membership card and give it a try!
