Friends Of Lincoln Castle

“Restoring the beauty of the Castle...”

Projects at the castle include refurbishing the benches that are placed around the grounds and assisting in keeping the gardens looking tidy, to provide a pleasant visitor experience. These tasks mainly take place during the Springtime and Summer and a work timetable is published around March.

Bench Refurbishment.   Most of the seating benches in the Castle have been donated by the Friends of Lincoln Castle over the years and so the Friends take responsibility for

keeping them in good shape for use by visitors. Each year, those in most need of a clean-up are rubbed down and given a coat of wood-seal.  Where possible, the benches are refurbished in situ but, in the event of wet weather, the staff place benches in the Bath House where they can be done under cover.  All materials and gloves etc are provided so those who volunteer to help need only wear suitable clothes.

Gardening.   The main gardening task is weeding and general tidying of the Friends Garden near Cobb Hall. This is not a large task and so the Friends also help to keep the Butterfly Garden neat and tidy.  The staff position a trailer on the path by the garden on gardening days so cleared weeds and plants don’t have to be carried far. Volunteers are requested to bring their own gardening tools, a garden fork and hand fork are most useful, with secateurs sometimes being required.

Other Projects.   From time to time, other projects arise, one new one being the maintenance of the carved tree stump, which will require regular treatment to prolong its life.

Health and Safety.  Risk assessments have been carried out for both the bench refurbishment and the gardening tasks. All volunteers are requested to read and sign the booklets which are kept in the castle office before their first session of work.

Contact.  The FOLC Committee Member for Projects is Brian, who produces the work timetable and ensures that the necessary consumables are available for use. He can be contacted via projects@folc.co.uk

Please spare a little time and come and help to keep the castle looking good for visitors.
